Dharmakaya, Inc., an affliate of a nonprofit Buddhist organization in Asia, retained BFJ to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), including a Scoping Document, Draft and Final EIS and SEQR Findings Statement, for the development of a Buddhist hermitage on a 91-acre site in the Hamlet of Cragsmor, Town of Wawarsing, Ulster County, New York. The proposed action involved the construction of a 17 building, 78,000 sf Buddhist hermitage, a center for Buddhist meditation retreats. The 91acre project site is partially located within the Cragsmor Historic District and lies completely within the Shawangunk Ridge habitat complex, a diverse ecosystem of upland and wetland communities that is noted as an important migration corridor for raptors, other migratory birds, and mammals. BFJ coordinated closely with the project team, including the project engineer and project architect to develop a site plan and project mitigation measures that best capitalize on and preserve this distinct landscape of steep slopes, wooded areas, open fields, scenic vistas, and wetlands. |
