Urban Design

BFJ’s professionals include architects, planners, and urban designers with experience in a range of urban design and site planning projects for public and private clients. These include design studies for downtown areas and urban waterfronts; detailed site plans for housing, commercial, and light industrial uses; and adaptive re-use projects for institutional campuses as well as for individual buildings.

New Communities and Master Plans

The firm has completed a number of major master plan assignments including new community plans within the United States as well as in China, Egypt, Brazil, and Vietnam. Our work on the Master Plan for Hanoi included the preparation of long-term plans for the Core City and for five new satellite cities.

Downtown and Neighborhood Revitalization

An important component of BFJ’s work involves the preparation of plans for downtown and neighborhood areas on behalf of municipal governments, public agencies and not-for-profit neighborhood groups.

Site Plans

BFJ’s urban design skills, supported by its expertise in zoning, comprehensive planning and transportation planning, have been utilized in numerous mixed-use and residential developments. The firm’s past work includes a number of neighborhood studies in East Harlem and a Master Plan for the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Streetscapes and Design Guidelines

A number of the firm’s downtown and neighborhood studies involve the preparation of detailed guidelines covering building facade, site layout, and streetscape elements. Recent assignments include work in Hudson, NY; Port Washington, NY; Bethel, CT; Weehawken, NJ; and Williamstown, MA.
